My 6 Favorite iPhone Apps
ok, I have turned into one of those people. I honestly don’t know what I would do without my iPhone. It just really is the most useful tool ever. It is a gps, map, people connector, time waster, currency converter, flashlight…. You name it, it’s possible. These are my 6 favorite apps.
1. Pinterest. Like the rest of the world, I love Pinterest. I was introduced to it about a year ago and it has...

Tempeh Eggplant Pot Pie
2 years ago when my boyfriend and I started dating, I thought that his being a vegetarian would literally lead to the end of our relationship. I didn’t eat fish (I am still a VERY picky fish eater), didn’t eat lentils, didn’t eat tofu, and certainly didn’t eat tempeh. Granted I mostly lived off of takeout anyway, the idea of both starting to cook more and cooking vegetarian just seemed like a...

From the Library: Chocolate. A Love Story
Chocolate. A Love Story
By Max Brenner
Before it came to America, I fell in love with Max Brenner. I found “Chocolate by the bald man” in Israel with restaurant set-ups that look like Willy Wonka’s factory. They have everything chocolate on their menu from fondu to chocolate pizza. A few years ago, Max Brenner came out with a cookbook for desserts. It is one of the prettiest books I...

Curried Lentils with Garbanzo Beans and Pita...
Weeknights can be tough. By the time I get home, all I want to do is relax and I’m usually starving so having quick, easy meals is always important. This curried lentils dish below is one of my favorites. One warning, the recipe below makes a big pot! So if you’re looking for a smaller portion or don’t like the leftover thing then cut the recipe at least in half.

6 Places to Look to Spark Creativity
Creativity is important in life. Being able to “think outside the box” or look at a problem from a new angle keeps teams, companies, and people going. I hate when my mind gets stuck. Whether it’s writing a post, looking for a new direction at work, or thinking about a new hobby, sometimes I need a way to ignite something (anything!) Below are some of the methods I use to spark creativity and...

At Home: A Short History of Private Life
By Bill Bryson
When I received this book, I thought I would never get through it. It’s a little long and I also had the hardcover copy meaning it would not be a travel book or metro book. I started reading it before bed each night. This book is fascinating. It brings the reader through each room in the house, additionally going on various tangents meaning...

French Toast - A Brunch Classic
Every Friday my boyfriend and I celebrate Shabbat with candles, wine, and challah. The best part of Shabbat is that you can use the challah for French toast on Saturday or Sunday mornings! I’ve been making French toast with my mom since I was a little kid. Here’s the recipe we use.
French Toast
1 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
¼ cup of sugar
½ tsp. vanilla
Beat eggs with sugar and vanilla....

In the past few days, there have been some excellent articles written about a variety of topics. I’ve tweeted all of them, but figured they were worth a “media roundup” post here. Read and enjoy.

From the Library: The Time Traveler's Wife
The Time Traveler’s Wife
If you have seen this movie, read the book because, like most movies, the book is much better. My favorite genre is tragic romance and THIS is a tragic romance. The book really brings you in and captures you in the story. I think the way it is written also keeps the reader engaged and excited. There are different story threads going on all at the same time and you just...

6 Things I Learned from Working in Kitchens
I love working in kitchens. They are work hard, play hard atmosphere where you work your butt off but have a ton of fun doing it. Now I should mention here that when I say kitchen, I don’t mean fine dining. I mean camp kitchens, dorm kitchens, pretty much locations where you are serving at least 500 people and not in the organized “let me show you to your table” kind of way. I find the lessons I...

Peanut Soup, Senegalese Style
I love soup! They are delicious and wonderful and you can eat soup with sandwiches or salads. There are hundreds of different soups you can make so make sure to keep checking back for soup recipes (especially in the winter when some nice, hot soup just hits the spot). Recently looking for a new, light spring soup recipe, I found the one below. It is flavorful, healthy, and easy to make. AND it’s a...

From the library: The Flying Camel
The Flying Camel: Essays on identity by women of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Heritage is one of the best books that integrates excellent storytelling with exploration of a complicated identity type. In honor of Women’s Day being this week, I chose this as the first highlight from my library. In America, a majority of the Jewish community is Ashkenazi (of European origin). Growing up,...

My 6 Favorite Spices
I love adding spices to food. A little bit of this, a pinch of that. Spices change food to enable you to achieve a smoky flavor, a sweet flavor, to add a little kick, or anything you desire. Here are my six favorite spices.
Cumin. Cumin, cumin, and more cumin. Remember in My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding when they talk about Windex being the solution to any injury? That’s the way I feel about...

6 reasons I started this blog
For a few weeks (read months, years, and other longer amounts of time), I have been toying with the idea of starting a blog. The idea usually strikes me at the following moments- when I am bored, when I have learned something interesting, or when I have just gotten back from a conference or some other immersion experience. So I’ve decided to take the step and just do it! I guess we’ll see...
